Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences celebrated a milestone as the first two students from the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences program graduated at the university's 125th Commencement on May 30.

More than 400 new health professionals graduated on May 30, 2025, with degrees from Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences at the university's 125th Commencement Ceremony.

Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences honored nine graduates at its annual Military Commisioning Ceremony on May 29, 2025.

Research conducted by Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences students Chia-Ming Lee, D.O. '24 and Victoria Mathis, Ph.D. '26 was featured in PLoS One.

On May 7, Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences recognized 160 students with service and leadership awards.

For the 23rd consecutive year, Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences' College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery students retained a 100% placement rate, upholding a tradition of excellence. The CPMS class of 2025 joins an esteemed group of alumni as they enter the health care workforce.

The Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine Class of 2025 has achieved a 99% match rate in the 2025 National Resident Matching Program. The results, announced March 21, mark another milestone in DMU's longstanding success in preparing future physicians.

Four students from the Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program received travel awards from the DMU Office of Research for their recent presentation at conferences. These funds are awarded to support students in showcasing their innovative work at medical conferences across the country and share their unique findings with peers. Through their presentations, students gained valuable experience not only engaging with leading experts but also refining their research communication skills and representing DMU on a national level. Presenting students and their research include the following.

Over 100 students Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences, presented their research at DMU's 2024 Research Symposium. The annual event highlights groundbreaking student, faculty and community research in health care and biomedical sciences. The symposium, themed Path Forward: Technology-Driven and Patient-Centered, reflects DMU's commitment to driving innovation, fostering collaboration and improving health care outcomes through cutting-edge research. The 2024 Research Symposium included a variety of presentations, including oral talks and posters. This year's program also welcomed high school students through a new initiative called the Young Scientist Program, designed to inspire the next generation of health care researchers. DMU hosts the Research Symposium annually to celebrate and support interdisciplinary collaboration among students, faculty and regional partners.

Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences played a prominent role at the Iowa Physician Assistant Society Fall Continuing Medical Education Conference, held in October in Coralville, Iowa. Themed Healthcare in the Heartland, the event featured educational sessions, a student symposium and multidisciplinary presentations, showcasing the exceptional expertise and contributions of DMU faculty, students and alumni. Highlights of DMU Involvement Student Presentation MacKenzie Kort, M.S.P.A.S.'25, of West Des Moines, Iowa, presented a research poster titled "Strides to Safety: Promoting Skin Health in Runners." Her work highlighted the importance of dermatological care for athletes and underscored DMU students' commitment to innovative, impactful research. Multidisciplinary Presentation DMU faculty members Shawna Swain, M.S.P.A.S., PA-C, Jillian Jones, D.P.T., CBIS, and Emily Summerfield, O.T.D./L, CBIS, delivered a joint presentation, "Stay on Your Feet: A Fun Guide to Fall Prevention in Our Golden Years." This engaging session provided actionable strategies for addressing fall risks, emphasizing interprofessional collaboration. Faculty Speaker Yujiang Fang, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology, shared his expertise in a presentation titled "Updates of Diagnosis and Management of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia." Alumni Contributions DMU alumni Britta TenHaken, M.S.P.A.S.'19, and Morgan McGinn, M.S.P.A.S.'18, returned to the conference as speakers, demonstrating the continued impact of DMU graduates in advancing health care education and practice.

Jacquine Egbon, D.P.M.'27, of West Des Moines, Iowa, has been selected as the recipient of the Joseph Dorgan Memorial Trust Scholarship. This distinguished endowed fund was established to aid, comfort, support and provide assistance to African American individuals, reflecting a commitment to fostering equity and opportunity in education. Awardees of the scholarship are nominated by their respective college deans, with one exceptional student chosen from the pool of nominees. Egbon's selection highlights her academic excellence, dedication to the field of podiatric medicine and embodiment of the values the scholarship represents. Chloe Van Vliet, D.P.M.'26, of Otley, Iowa, has been named the recipient of the Bako Pathology Scholarship. This scholarship, endowed by Bradley Bakotic, D.O., D.P.M., and Bako Pathology, recognizes third- and fourth-year podiatric medical students who demonstrate exceptional skill and dedication in the field of pathology. The Bako Pathology Scholarship reflects a commitment to advancing podiatric education through recognition of outstanding student achievement. Van Vliet's selection highlights her excellence in pathology and her dedication to advancing health care through a deeper understanding of diagnostic tools. Des Moines University Students Recognized With APMA Educational Foundation Scholarships Sixteen podiatric medical students at Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences' College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery have been awarded scholarships from the American Podiatric Medical Association Educational Foundation for the 2024-25 academic year. These scholarships, totaling $1,500 each, recognize academic excellence, financial need and a commitment to advancing podiatric medicine. In addition, a special $5,000 scholarship was awarded to DMU student Zach Katzman, '26 of Waukee, Iowa.

Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences' College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery is proud to announce that Meagan Hartman, D.P.M.'26, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Grant Brouwer, D.P.M.'27, of Sibley, Iowa and Joseph Barnett, D.P.M.'27 of West Des Moines, Iowa, have been awarded the prestigious Rebecca A. Stills Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship honors the legacy of Rebecca Stills, a much-loved DMU CPMS staff member who dedicated her life to supporting students and advancing podiatric medicine. The Rebecca Stills Memorial Scholarship was established in 2004 to commemorate Stills' invaluable contributions to the CPMS community. Known for her professionalism, compassion and unwavering dedication, Stills guided countless students through their academic journeys while at DMU. Supported by alumni and friends of DMU who recognize the importance of providing financial assistance to exceptional students pursuing careers in podiatric medicine, the scholarship fund continues to grow. Elizabeth Gajardo-Sitt, a fourth-year student in the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine program at Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences, has been selected as this year's American Podiatric Medical Student Association National Student of the Year.

Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences recently inducted 31 students into the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

438 Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences students from five programs to receive their white coat during the university's annual White Coat Ceremony Friday, Sept. 13.

Matthew Dandan, a fourth-year student in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences has been awarded the 2024 Sterling K. Welch Scholarship by the American Osteopathic Foundation.

Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences selected four students in its Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program for Osteopathic Manual Medicine Fellowships. Students complete the one-year OMM Fellowship program in addition to the four-year osteopathic medicine curriculum. Students are chosen to participate in the program based on their knowledge and skill in osteopathic manual medicine, used to treat structural and functional issues in the bones, joints, tissues and muscles of the body. Fellows provide care to patients with musculoskeletal disorders, teach first- and second-year osteopathic medical students and research osteopathic manual medicine. They receive a waiver of a portion of their tuition and a monthly stipend while participating in the program.

Christian Low, a third-year student in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences, has been awarded the 2024 medical student tuition scholarship by the Colorado Springs Osteopathic Foundation. This prestigious award recognizes Low's dedication to osteopathy and his commitment to serving his community. "I am extremely grateful to the CSOF for this wonderful opportunity," Low says. In addition to the scholarship, Low sought the foundation's advice about the medical journey during his interview process. "They shared their insights on finding strength to persevere through the difficult times that will come with the profession. Both retired and practicing providers clarified that while being a physician is the job, taking care of others should be a part of the passion - regardless of the reason for choosing this path. I will carry their advice with me through rotations and in my future career." Low is actively involved in numerous extracurricular activities, which have enriched his medical school experience. He received the Diversity Health Series certificate for cultural humility training and was awarded the Muscle Energy Band "Rockstar" award as one of the student band leaders. Moreover, he served as president of the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association from Feb. 2023 to Feb. 2024 and was the secretary for DMU Health Leaders during that same period, where he focused on promoting Asian culture in Iowa and improving the medical student journey.

Margret Roberts, a second-year student in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences, from Lake Saint Louis, Missouri, recently attended the American College of Emergency Physicians Leadership and Advocacy Conference in Washington D.C. Representing all four of Iowa's congressional districts, she joined fellow emergency medicine physicians, residents and students to discuss critical issues such as the national boarding crisis, workplace violence, Medicare reimbursement and mental health access. Roberts and her colleagues met with Iowa legislators, including Senator Chuck Grassley and Representatives Zach Nunn, Randy Feenstra, Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Ashley Hinson, to advocate for bipartisan acts aimed at improving patient and staff safety in emergency departments. "It was a great opportunity to earn Continuing Medical Education credits and meet colleagues from around the nation with similar interests and passions," Roberts says. "With another successful trip to ACEP LAC behind me, I look forward to continuing my advocacy work at the Capitol throughout my career in medicine."

Des Moines University's College of Health Sciences proudly congratulates the Class of 2024 graduates from the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program who have received award recognition.

Edina Shu of Newton, Mass., was among the more than 400 new health professionals who graduated May 24 with degrees from Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa. Shu completed her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. She received a clinical discipline award in internal medicine and also was selected for membership in Sigma Sigma Phi, a national honorary osteopathic service fraternity. Only 25% of class members are chosen for membership based on academic achievement and service to the university, community and/or the osteopathic profession. Shu will begin an internal medicine residency at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Given the sheer volume of knowledge and skills that future health care providers and scientists must acquire, it is important to teach them in ways that optimize their learning. Toward this goal, research by Cali Bills and Andrew Mannisto, second-year students in the osteopathic medicine program at Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences, and Martin Schmidt, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and nutrition and a curriculum fellow in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, explored the benefits of small-group discussions among DMU students in different health professions programs. A poster summarizing their research, titled "Fostering Interprofessional Collaboration Skills Through Small Group Case-Based Learning," recently won first place among the faculty poster finalists in the poster competition at the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine's annual conference.
